Flight of the Piasa - Robert Sheldon. Flight of the Piasa was written to depict the majesty of the legendary Piasa, an enormous winged creature, and the bravery of the Illini tribe who triumphed over its reign of terror. The discovery of the Piasa dates to 1673, when the cliff drawing painted high on the bluffs was first seen by Marquette during his famous journey down the Mississippi River. Grade 4 (29477) $75.00
Air Mobility Command March - Mark Camphouse. With headquarters at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, the mission of Air Mobility Command (AMC) is to provide airlift, air refueling, special air missions and aeromedical evacuation for United States forces. Composer Mark Camphouse has drawn thematic material from Robert Crawford’s “Air Force Song” to create this new march honoring Air Mobility Command. Supplication - J. Eric Schmidt. This final movement from Eric Schmidt’s monumental Symphony of Prayer ebbs and flows from moments of quiet and gentle prayerful entreaty to expressions of a bold and powerful faith. Polka from The Bartered Bride - Smetana, arr. Gary E. Parks. Whirling, brightly-clad dancers, brought to life in Smetana’s “Polka” from The Bartered Bride, are reanimated in this exhilarating transcription for concert band. Evensong - William G. Harbinson. Evensong is a beautiful ballad in standard song (ABA) form with a brief coda. The lyric nature of the composition offers opportunities to develop the ensemble’s expressive playing with concentration on tone, intonation, balance, and phrasing. The contrasting B section features the woodwind voices and moves through several non-traditional key areas (B, D, C major) before returning to the tonic key (E-flat major) for a varied restatement of the A section. A Chesapeake Bay Adventure - Vince Gassi. Commissioned by the 2007 Albemarle County High School Honors Band (Crozet, VA), this piece takes its inspiration from the rich maritime history of the Chesapeake Bay—from colonial lighthouses to Civil War ironclads; from its vital role in the underground railroad to Blackbeard and other real-life pirates. Adventure is paramount as swashbuckling themes are developed in the opening and closing sections of this work and beautifully contrasted with the haunting lyrical section reminiscent of “Oh Shenandoah.” Grade 3½ (29480) $72.00
Art in the Park - Robert Sheldon. Art in the Park is a four-movement work that musically portrays various styles and techniques used in the visual arts. Musical representations of high energy cubism, dreamy impressionistic aquarelle, the nobility and subtle shadings of chiaroscuro, and a percussion ensemble’s rendition of a sgraffito are included, with the orchestration designed to depict the style of the brushstrokes in each painting. Spirit of Flight - John O'Reilly. Spirit of Flight was commissioned by the USAF Academy Band, commanded by Lt. Col. Steven Grimo, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the US Air Force. The composer, John O’Reilly, has written a sparkling composition that inspires young people to feel the amazing combination of exhilaration, serenity, and excitement all pilots experience when flying a mission. Casey at the Bat - Randol Alan Bass. Casey at the Bat is based on the well-known poem of the same title, first published in San Francisco during the late 1800s by Ernest L. Thayer. This musical version of the famous story was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony and was given its first performance by that ensemble in April, 2001, with Pat Sajak serving as narrator. The composer subsequently arranged the work for wind ensemble at the request of Col. Michael Colburn, director of the “President’s Own” Marine Band in Washington, DC. Grade 5 (29481) $75.00

Fantasy on an Early American Marching Tune - Robert Sheldon. Fantasy on an Early American Marching Tune is based on the popular fife and drum melody, “The Girl I Left Behind Me.” All melodies and countermelodies in the piece are drawn from this well-known theme, as they are altered and re-worked to create new melodic material. Wind - Darren W. Jenkins. Wind was originally a part of a multi-movement work based on the elements of the universe. It has been re-scored and edited for symphonic band. Through this piece, the composer has tried to musically represent the many facets of wind—quiet and gentle… a wistful and mysterious breeze…the flurry of a gusting wind…and the calm, somewhat eerie feeling after a storm. A Hero’s Return - Douglas A. Richard. A Hero’s Return was written for the West Point Middle School Band, located at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. The opening section conveys the celebratory atmosphere of when a hero comes home to friends and family. The middle section represents the quiet tribute we pay to the fond memories of heroes no longer in our midst. Mussorgsky! - Mussorgsky, arr. L. C. Harnsberger. Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881) was a relatively unknown composer during his lifetime, but some of his works are among today’s best-known pieces in concert halls and films. His orchestral work Night on Bald Mountain was immortalized by Walt Disney in Fantasia, and Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the most performed pieces by symphony orchestras. Selections from these two pieces are wonderfully transcribed for young band in Mussorgsky! The arrangement begins with the mystical opening from Night on Bald Mountain which transitions to the hauntingly beautiful ending of that same work. To conclude is the “Great Gate of Kiev” from Pictures at an Exhibition which is one of music literature’s most inspiring moments. Grade 2½ (29470) $52.00
Appalachian Morning - Much of Kentucky’s musical heritage is steeped in the traditions of Appalachia, an area largely influenced by settlers from Scotland and Ireland. Appalachian Morning acknowledges these pioneers with a musical walk through the woods and mountains of the Cumberland Gap. Land of the Midnight Sun - Vince Gassi. Follow Crow on his epic journey southward and back as he attempts to bring daylight to the people of the far north. Then I Saw the Lucent Sky - Todd Stalter. This work was inspired by the music of Hildegard von Bingen, a medieval Benedictine nun whose chant melodies are remarkable for their soaring passages and simple beauty, and whose theological and visionary writings were unique for her time. The title comes from one of her writings: Then I saw the lucent sky, in which I heard different kinds of music, marvelously embodying all the meaning I had heard before. Grade 2 (29472) $52.00
Companions on the Journey - Brant Karrick. Imagine the exciting sensation and thrill of traveling with friends to a foreign country in another hemisphere for the first time! Companions on the Journey is a song of joy, camaraderie and celebration. Thrill Ride - Brendan McBrien. The opening measures of Thrill Ride depict our first glimpse of the giant structure. This is followed by the slow ride up the lift-hill and the blood-chilling first drop that begins our journey on this musical roller coaster. Anchors Aweigh - arr. Jerry Brubaker. A young band arrangement of Anchors Aweigh scored by the former chief arranger for the United States Navy Band will certainly join the forces! Return of the Monarchs - Victor Lopez. Musically tracking the fascinating migration paths of these beautiful insects, this work vividly represents the life of a monarch.
