Mineola Waltz - arr. Carl Strommen. Originally composed in 1890 by John W. Hawd, this Carl Strommen arrangement was scored for the centennial celebration of the Village of Mineola. The Algonquin term Mineola literally means “a friendly and pleasant village.” Mineola Waltz is a similarly pleasant work with a familiar-sounding melody and all of the flourish and panache of a distinctive waltz. Trumpet March and Ayre - arr. James D. Ployhar. Jeremiah Clark was a composer of Baroque music and his Trumpet March and Ayre is incredibly distinctive. Semper Melior - John Fannin. Semper Melior (Always Better) is the motto of the Murray Middle School and Murray High School Bands, who commissioned this marvelous composition. This exciting piece gives student the opportunity to explore shifting 6 8 – 3 4 rhythmic patterns. Woodwind runs are based on the E flat major scale and lay well for developing techniques. Poème - Todd Stalter. Poème encourages young wind players to play expressively by giving them many opportunities to phrase and support a long musical line, all while using comfortable ranges and the entire dynamic spectrum. The Mystery of Duffy’s Cut
- Robert Sheldon. The Mystery of Duffy’s Cut was inspired by an apparition and a series of strange occurrences that have fueled interest in “Duffy’s Cut,” a mass burial site in Malvern, Pennsylvania where 57 Irish immigrant workers died mysteriously while doing work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1832. This tone poem chronicles the life and times of these men. Grade 2.5 (26815) $52.00Contraption - Brendan McBrien. Contraption is a tone poem describing an imaginary machine of great size and power. The word “contraption” is defined as “a device or machine regarded as strange, incomprehensible, or makeshift.” This concept has been applied to the construction of this musical composition. The creation of this piece was accomplished in the same way an inventor might build a physical contraption, in this case limited to three main component “parts” plus an interlude. Aeolian Winds - John F. Edmunds. In Greek mythology, Aeolus was called “god of the winds.” Legend has it he was visited by Odysseus and his crew, and that he provided for a west wind to carry them home. The E-flat major scale is fully exploited in this skillfully composed and orchestrated melody, whose brief excursions into foreign tonal centers are clearly notated with accidentals rather than new key signatures.
