ETERNAL VIGILANCE (THE LONG BRAVE LINE) - Robert Jager. The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” and a variation of the West Point motto, “The Long Gray Line.” Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. SUITE DREAMS (Score and Parts) - Steven Bryant. Suite Dreams is the fourth installment in Steven Bryant's Parody Suite (along with Chester Leaps In, ImPercynations, and MetaMarch). These are works that take familiar melodies and motives from classic band “warhorses” and rework them – sort of a remix or “mash-up” of wind band hits. Suite Dreams draws primarily from the inverted chaconne melody in Holst's First Suite in E-Flat, recasting it in a dreamlike atmosphere, almost as if (sometimes warped) memories of the original are drifting across the stage. TRANZENDENTAL DANSE OF JOI - James Bonney. This energetic new work fuses the percussion of street musicians, the wind and brass colors of modern jazz, and the form and structure of classical music. Percussionists play everything from plastic buckets to clay flowerpots while laying down a heavily syncopated groove. There is an open section that allows any instrument you desire the unique opportunity to show off their improvisational skills in a wind ensemble setting. PERFECT TRIP - Patrick J. Burns. Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of a winning steed. It was written for the 20th anniversary concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band in New Jersey at the request of the band's founding director, Dr. C. Christian Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much more than a typical one mile horse race and depicts the event from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energy at the starting gate and the ensuing excitement approaching the first turn, the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch, and the increasing drama as the pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the big finish. SYMPHONY NO. 5 - FINALE (EXCERPTS) - Dmitri Shostakovich/arr. Robert Longfield. Shostakovich's dramatic work is finally available in a version playable by younger bands. NATURE'S WAY - Gunther Schuller. From the composer: “Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. HALF MOON ON THE HUDSON - Michael Sweeney. Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. AND HOLD IN MEMORY... Johnnie Vinson. This beautifully constructed tone poem features a memorable lyric melody stated first by the horns and clarinets, and later by a trumpet duet accompanied by the brass section. Johnnie uses a nice blend of lighter textures with the woodwinds prominent, alternating with fuller sections voiced for the entire ensemble. FANTASIA ON A THEME BY THOMAS TALLIS - Ralph Vaughan Williams/arr. Jay Bocook. This piece combines the simple, elegant thematic material of Elizabethan church composer Thomas Tallis, expanded and modernized through the luxurious harmonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams. A setting for band was long overdue, and Jay Bocook does a masterful job of transforming the original work for string orchestra into a magnificant setting for winds. HIGHWOOD OVERTURE - John Tatgenhorst. This exciting overture opens with a fanfare section that emphasizes the brass and is active rhythmically as well as harmonically. A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads.
